Después del primer caso de contagio en Africa (Egipto), América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) se mantienen como las únicas regiones oficialmente libres del COVID-19. Según la doctora Sylvain Aldighieri, coordinadora de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), además de medidas de detección temprana y aislamiento establecidas por los gobiernos locales, “una de las principales razones es que hay menos viajeros y vuelos directos desde China en comparación con otros países de Asia, Europa y América del Norte” (BBC Mundo).
Y aunque las autoridades sanitarias latinoamericanas y caribeñas se han mostrado en alerta, implementado medidas preventivas y evaluando los casos sospechosos de coronavirus, América Latina ya enfrenta otra emergencia sanitaria con la peor epidemia de dengue de su historia:
Paralelamente, otra historia en desarrollo se enfoca en los ciudadanos latinoamericanos y caribeños que se encontraban en China al declararse la cuarentena en la provincia de Hubei. Algunos ya han regresado a sus países de origen, y otros están en proceso de hacerlo. Uno de esos casos es el vuelo de la Fuerza Aérea de Colombia en ruta para sacar de China a 13 ciudadanos colombianos y a tres extranjeros. Otro grupo compuesto por ocho argentinos, cinco ecuatorianos, cinco dominicanos, cuatro salvadoreños, dos costarricenses y una panameña, salió de China vía Ucrania, en un vuelo que repatrío a 45 ciudadanos ucranianos, señaló BBC Mundo.
